Recover a MultiBit Classic password or MultiBit HD wallet

MultiBit Classic and MultiBit HD store wallet data differently. A useful recovery assessment starts with the exact edition, surviving files, backup folders, and whether a password or wallet words are missing.

Can a forgotten MultiBit Classic password be recovered?

It may be assessable when the correct encrypted wallet or backup still exists and the owner remembers useful non-sensitive password patterns, variants, substitutions, or candidate words. Recovery may be impractical when the backup is wrong or incomplete, or when a strong password is entirely unknown. No outcome is guaranteed.

Why the edition matters

MultiBit Classic may involve .wallet files, key exports, and automatic backups. MultiBit HD commonly uses files such as mbhd.wallet.aes and wallet words. Treating one format as the other can waste time or damage the only useful copy.

What to preserve

Keep the original computer, the complete MultiBit application folder, all backup directories, exported key files, and any removable media used at the time. Copy the material without renaming or editing it, retain timestamps where possible, and perform experiments only on working copies.

Forgotten password or missing wallet words

A forgotten password may be assessable when the encrypted data is intact and the owner remembers non-sensitive structure such as approximate length, likely words, substitutions, language, or a password family. Missing wallet words are a different problem and depend on the edition and the exact surviving backup.

What not to do

Do not upload a wallet file to a public converter, run unknown “unlock” software, or keep importing the sole backup into modern wallets. Do not send a password, seed, private key, or wallet file in an initial message.

Realistic limits

A public address or historical balance does not prove that the surviving file controls those funds. An incomplete file, the wrong backup, a strong unknown password, or absent key material can make recovery impractical or impossible.

Frequently asked questions

Can MultiBit still be opened after the software was discontinued?

Sometimes the keys or encrypted wallet data can still be evaluated, but continued daily use of discontinued software is not recommended. Preserve the original material before migration.

Are MultiBit Classic and MultiBit HD backups interchangeable?

No. They use different wallet structures and recovery paths. Identification comes before any attempt.

Does a watch-only balance mean the private keys are present?

No. A watch-only wallet can display addresses and transactions without containing the private keys needed to spend.

Request a free feasibility assessment

KeyBack considers owner-authorized cases only. The initial feasibility assessment is free. If a bounded recovery attempt is viable, success-fee terms are agreed in writing before work begins. For the initial assessment, describe whether the wallet is MultiBit Classic or HD, which wallet and backup filenames survive, the approximate year, and the general password pattern you remember. Never send wallet words, passwords, private keys, or wallet files.
