Forgot an Ethereum keystore password? Preserve the UTC-- file and identify its origin

A UTC--… JSON keystore can contain an encrypted Ethereum private key. Its password cannot be reset, but an intact file plus meaningful owner clues may justify a feasibility assessment.

Recognize the material

Geth, Mist, and compatible Ethereum tools commonly stored encrypted key files in a keystore directory. The file name, JSON structure, original application, network, and approximate date help distinguish a usable keystore from an unrelated JSON file.

Preserve every version

Keep the original UTC-- file, entire keystore folder, old computer, backups, and any migration copies. Do not edit JSON formatting, convert the file through an unknown website, or discard duplicates with different timestamps.

Why password clues matter

The encryption is designed to resist guessing. Approximate length, remembered words, substitutions, keyboard patterns, capitalization, dates, separators, and known password families can narrow a candidate space. Never disclose the full password in the initial form.

Confirm the expected address

A keystore commonly records or implies the public Ethereum address. That can be compared with public transaction history without exposing the encrypted key material.

Realistic limits

A malformed or incomplete file, the wrong keystore, or a strong random password with no clues can make recovery infeasible. An Ethereum address alone cannot be converted back into its private key.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ethereum or Geth reset the keystore password?

No. Self-custody keystore encryption has no central reset.

Are Mist and Geth keystores related?

Mist used Ethereum account infrastructure compatible with Geth-style keystores, but the exact file and context should still be identified.

Can I repair a keystore by editing the JSON?

Do not edit the only copy. Preserve the original and assess copies.
