Browser wallet data

Old MetaMask vault or forgotten password: what must still exist?

If the Secret Recovery Phrase is unavailable, a surviving encrypted MetaMask vault inside the original browser profile may provide a separate owner-authorized recovery path. A public address alone does not.

Password recovery and seed recovery are different

The MetaMask password unlocks locally stored encrypted vault data. It is not the same as the Secret Recovery Phrase. Resetting the extension without preserving the profile can remove the local evidence needed for assessment.

Preserve the entire browser profile

Keep the original computer or a forensic image, the complete Chrome, Brave, Edge, or Firefox profile, extension storage, and backups. Do not reinstall the browser, clear site data, reset the extension, or run cleanup tools on the only copy.

What makes the case plausible

A recoverable vault must actually exist and be complete. Password memories such as approximate length, likely words, punctuation, capitalization, language, and variants can materially affect feasibility.

Validate with public information

Known public addresses and transaction records can help confirm whether a decrypted candidate belongs to the expected wallet. They do not reveal the password or private keys.

When there is no path

If no Secret Recovery Phrase, private key, encrypted vault, browser profile, device backup, or other private-key-bearing material survives, MetaMask support cannot recreate the wallet from an address.

Frequently asked questions

Can MetaMask reset a forgotten local password?

No. The password is local to the device. A seed can restore the wallet, or an intact encrypted vault may sometimes be assessed.

Does reinstalling MetaMask help?

It can destroy or overwrite useful local context. Preserve the profile before making changes.

Should I use an online vault decryptor?

Do not upload vault data or secrets to an untrusted site. Start with a non-sensitive assessment.

Free assessment · 15% success fee. Unless a written case agreement states otherwise, the fee applies only to assets for which usable access is successfully restored. No recovery is guaranteed.
